With a love for music including jazz, soul, classical and rock, George Begbie cannot imagine a life without it. Growing up in Hobart, he studied classical piano before finding his real passion in jazz and rock piano. Putting his classical study on hold, he pursued contemporary piano styles as a teenager. He was a member of numerous bands, including a saxophone, piano & vocal jazz trio.

After the trio disbanded he began concentrating on his solo work. He found that audiences identified with his music in solo form more intimately than if they were watching a group. He has been performing gigs around Hobart at the Stanley Burbury Theatre, Trout Bar, Lizbon, Republic Bar, as well as being a regular at the Lark Distillery and the Telegraph Hotel. He has recently embarked on recording his first album over the last 6 months. Musings on Hobart life, love and friendships play central album themes, complemented by the input of local musicians.

George Begbie believes in bringing back the ‘Piano Man’, the beauty of a single voice singing its heart out to a grand piano, a sound second to none. While he has been influenced by a diversity of performers including Ben Folds, The Whitlams and The Lucksmiths, his striking style is evident within the music he writes.
